OLD SCHOOL SILK SPECTRE

Special thanks to Red Stapler for this one.

As the countdown to the WATCHMEN movie ticks on I expect to see all manner of kooky stuff related to or inspired by the source graphic novel all over the internet, and here's a truly excellent and creative example of what I'm talking about:

It's a portrait of Sally Jupiter — nee Sally Juspeczyk — aka the 1940's Silk Spectre, easily my favorite of the Minutemen-era characters found in the story. This piece perfectly captures her public image as something of a superhero sexpot, and if you've read the graphic novel you know the sad soap opera that surrounds her. (Click on the image to see it large.) I won't say any more so as not to spoil it for those unfamiliar with WATCHMEN, but I do urge all of you who have not read it to take the time and judge for yourself whether it really is the "greatest graphic novel of all time." I have my own opinion on that ongoing debate, but that's a subject for another post (which I promise to get to before the movie comes out).

Oh, and the artist responsible for this Elvgrenesque bit of excellence is none other than James Jean, the same guy who does the gorgeous covers for the monthly Vertigo book FABLES.

James Jean's preliminary studies.
