IN DREAMS I WALK WITH YOU, FART-KNOCKER

David Lynch, auteur screenwriter/director.

Last night I had a dream in which I was part of the throng that was admitted to a secret free sneak preview of a new movie. As we were admitted, we were told that part of the deal was that was had to sit through the entirety of the film, and the doors to the auditorium would be locked to ensure that we sat through the whole thing.  Along with a crowd that included several people that I know, I settled in with a tub of popcorn and waited for the lights to dim. After a number of arthouse trailers — nearly always a bad sign — the film finally started. The opening titles said it all:

Asymmetrical Productions Presents:

David Lynch's

BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD

At the sight of this the audience began to murmur amongst itself, and some of us thought it was a joke along the lines of the phony credits at the beginning of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. But no. In no time we realized that we were to be subjected to a three-and-a-half-hour experimental black-and-white live-action iteration of the Mike Judge cartoon series that was set on a sound stage featuring minimalist set dressing, with a soundtrack of loud industrial noises.

The plot made no coherent sense, nor was it at all funny, and periodically, without rhyme or reason, the action would shift to still photos of the cast juxtaposed with visuals of the printed script in lieu of dialog. And sometimes the non-action was punctuated with cartoon sound effects and a randomly-deployed slide whistle.

After about five minutes, the audience attempted to leave but, as previously stated, all exits were locked, so there was no escape. As the film dragged on, the audience became irate and began lobbing cups of soda, buckets of popcorn, hot dogs, candy, anything that wasn't nailed down at the screen, but those siege efforts were foiled by a cleverly-disguised shield that protected the screening's backdrop.

As the audience reached a fever pitch, I awoke from my dream, disappointed because I wanted to see how it all came out. That, and I wanted to see how Lynch would handle the Great Cornholio. Alas...

THE MAGIC OF MISHEARD MISFITS

Until their songbook was officially released with the comprehensive coffin-shaped boxed set, there was perhaps no other punk bands whose semi-incomprehensible lyrics inspired as much conjecture as the Danzig-era Misfits. My buddy Greaseball Johnny and I spent years trying to makes heads or tails of their songs, often coming up lyrics that seemed right on the money, but then the songbook came out and revealed that for the most part Misfits songs were just a bunch of nonsensical gobbledegook coupled with kickass music, thus pointing out in no uncertain terms that Johnny and I had wasted our lives. And apparently we were not the only ones, as these videos will attest.

A CHEECH & CHONG CLASSIC IN ANIMATED FORM

Special thanks to my friend and former DC Comics colleague Morgan for alerting me to the existence of this one. I grew up as a huge fan of Cheech & Chong's albums — long before I ever got anywhere near being a stoner myself — yet I had no idea that any animated versions of their material ever existed.

EL LOCO NEGRO ES AQUI

December 21, 2013: The first recorded sighting of "El Loco Negro."

While finishing this year's Christmas shopping, after over two decades of searching I finally chanced upon a store in NYC that sells lucha libre masks for adult wearers. (They are usually found in kiddie sizes.) After perusing a selection of some sixty masks, I found one that not only fit my large noggin but also jibed with my aesthetic sensibilities. At long last my latest alter ego, "El Loco Negro," can walk the streets in search of wrongs to right, alien invasions to thwart, and monsters to put the boot to. I will also be taking lots of photos of myself in masked form in inappropriate places, only with my glasses on over the mask, so get ready, world!

THE NEXT DOCTOR PREPARES FOR HIS GREATEST ADVENTURE ACROSS TIME AND SPACE

This was taken yesterday evening at Way Station in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights, the bar where I periodically host cult movie double features. The full-size Tardis is the entrance to the bathroom and its walls are adorned with actual graffiti by the current Doctor and the chick who plays Amy Pond. Sorry the light on top isn't visible.

ARTIST COLLEN COOVER RE-INTERPRETS A CLASSIC FROM MY INFAMOUS SUBMISSIONS COLLECTION

Remember two years ago when I posted a classic from my infamous collection of crazy submissions found during my days in the Marvel Bullpen that featured Wolverine inexplicably running into Freddie Mercury in the middle of some random forest? Well, apparently artist Colleen Coover saw it and has been so haunted by its non sequitor imagery and tone that she's been moved to draw her own re-interpretation of it. Check this out:

Seriously, what's not to love here? Well done, Colleen!

And to truly give credit where credit is due, the submission in question was originally brought to my attention by Darren Auck, who was at the time the head of the Marvel Bullpen's art corrections section. He received tons of ludicrous submissions but that one practically exploded out of the envelope when he opened it. Knowing of my ever-growing binder filled with crazy submissions and letters — of which this was the most inspired but my no means the most genuinely insane — Darren let me photo copy it and now it's digitized and posted on the Internet, thus preserved for posterity.

JUST A RANDOM THOUGHT

Oh, what I would give for the Ed Wood-era Bela Lugosi to have done a dramatic reading reading of the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B" with his signature "Bevare of the big green dragon that sits on your doorstep!" and "Pull the string!!!" histrionics...
